Meriden Public Works Team Earns National Award

(Monday, April 7, 2025) The American Public Works Association today awarded the City
of Meriden Public Works Department the APWA 2025 Excellence in Snow and Ice Control Award
at the North American Snow Conference in Grand Rapids, MI.

The APWA established this award to promote excellence in the management and administration of
public works snow and ice operations and to promote the best practices in snow and ice removal,
while minimizing environmental impacts.

The Meriden Public Works Department was recognized for their snow plan, which includes route
rehearsals and skill-based pairing, as well as customized programs that provide practical, handson training for drivers and crews.
“I am so proud to represent the professional snow-fighters from Meriden and I accept this award on
their behalf,” said John P. Lawlor, Jr., Director of Public Works and Engineering for the City of
Meriden. “They are quiet professionals that work hard every day for Meriden. This award honors
them and the untiring efforts.”

Meriden DPW also takes a proactive approach to keeping the community updated on essential
information through the issuance of public notices on social media, the city website and the
Everbridge mass notification platform. In addition, they conduct targeted programs, including
school outreach and mailings.

“Managing snow and ice events is not just about keeping roads and sidewalks clear on any given
day,” said APWA President Dominick A. Longobardi. “The work that our winners do throughout the
winter months requires careful planning and preparation to keep people safely moving through their
daily lives.”
