South Meriden Volunteer Fire Department

The South Meriden Volunteer Fire Department (SMVFD) provides Emergency Services to the community living in South Meriden & Meriden. We respond to calls at any time of day for any type of emergency.

We are always looking for volunteers. Successful candidates will be Meriden residents over 18 years of age. Applicants must be a high school graduate, be in good health, have a clean police record, a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. We accept volunteers who live outside of Meriden area if they are already certified with a minimum FF-1 and EMS certification. Applications are accepted year-round but the new recruits process is normally done three times per year.

We train weekly and most of the members are at least Firefighter II certified and carry an EMT certification. Several are Fire Officer and Instructor certified.

We respond to about 300 calls per year. We are proud to staff Engine 6 with a minimum of three firefighters and can increase depending on availability and task requirements. In addition, we proudly staff Brush 1, the cities on Brush company.

Please remember. Vehicles displaying flashing blue lights are firefighters or EMTs responding to an emergency. Please yield right-of-way to them.
