Applying for a Marriage License

Marriage Licenses Requirements:



  1. Effective 11/1/2025, Both parties must complete a Marriage License Worksheet and provide clear copies of both parties' government-issued photo IDs.  These documents must be received by the City Clerk's Office prior to scheduling an appointment.  They can be sent via email to cityclerk@meridenct.gov, mailed to Meriden City Clerk's Office, 142 East Main St. Meriden, CT 06450 or brought in person before an appointment will be scheduled.



2.            Couples can only apply for a marriage license in the town where their marriage ceremony is to take place.



3.            The town that is written on the marriage license is the only town in which the applicants can be married.



4.            Applicants must know the date of marriage and the officiator performing the ceremony before they can apply for a license.



5.            You must be over the age of 18 to obtain a marriage license.



6.            The marriage license application is valid for 65 days from the date of when applicants apply.



7.            The marriage application must be filled out and submitted on-line. Applicants should know places of birth for both parents, as well as the mother's full maiden name. Once the application is filled out, call to make an appointment.  Appointments can be made between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM.  Please call 203-630-4030 or email cityclerk@meridenct.gov to schedule an appointment to obtain your license.



8.             Appointments will only be scheduled once all information has been received and determined complete.  Due to demand, appointments may be days or weeks from the date of inquiry.  Submission does not guarantee an appointment.  Confirmation will be provided once reviewed.  Please include contact information (email, phone number) when sending the Marriage License Worksheet via email or mail.



9.            Applicants for the marriage license must appear in person for the appointment.



10.          Identification in the form of a valid State ID or Passport is required for both parties.



11.          The statutory fee for a marriage license is $50.00. A certified copy of the license after the ceremony will cost $20.00 (As of July 1, 1997, certified copies with social security numbers showing will be issued to the bride and groom only).



12.          Who may join persons in marriage? 

Connecticut General Statute Sec. 46b-22 lists persons are authorized to perform marriages in Connecticut:

All judges, including out-of-state judges who are authorized to perform marriage ceremonies in their jurisdictions.

 

Family support magistrates, state referees and justices of   the peace who are appointed in Connecticut; and 

 

All ordained or licensed members of the clergy, belonging to this state or any other state. Persons ordained on-line and who are given the authority to officiate marriages through such ordination, DO meet the statutory requirements.

Ways for Ways for Officiators to return a completed marriage license:

1.    Return by mail in envelope provided by City Clerk’s office.

2.    Place in envelope (do not fold record) and use the drop box only during office hours at City Hall. Please call or email cityclerk@meridenct.gov when license is left in the drop box.

3.    Drop off in person to the City Clerk’s office.
