PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Meriden Raiders Football Season is Suspended for the Fall of 2020 to Protect Public Safety

MERIDEN- Today, the City of Meriden has released a memo announcing the suspension of the Meriden Raiders football season for the Fall of 2020. The decision was made in light of two separate cases associated with the Meriden Raiders football team, in which two players tested positive for COVID-19. Both incidents have caused a total quarantining of 62 individuals. The Department of Public Health has issued guidance in regards to this matter.

Public safety and the well-being of its community is the ultimate reason for City official’s decision to suspend the Meriden Raiders Fall season. The City has witnessed an uptick in positives cases since August and is looking to mitigate factors that may be causing an increase in cases. This decision is not made due to any fault on the part of the Raiders. Unfortunately, the sport is inherently risky in a COVID-19 environment.

The City stands ready to assist the Raiders going forward and clearly recognizes their importance to the youth of the City and the City as a whole.
