Building Permits

Applications for permits are available online, in the Building Department office or one can be mailed or faxed to you.  The permit fee for all permit types must accompany applications at the time of submittal.  Fees may be paid by cash, check or money order (payable to the City of Meriden, Building Department).

Building Permits - Applications must have appropriate sign-offs from Zoning and the Tax Collector.  Applications for new construction must also obtain sign-offs from the Engineering Department and Health Department.  Plans must be submitted for any addition or new building (garage, shed, etc.).  New residential/commercial/industrial construction requires submittal of two sets of plans and a site plan (plans must be stamped if project is over 5,000 square feet).  Applications are usually  submitted in person due to the amount of sign-offs required.  It is the applicant's responsibility to obtain the required signatures for sign-offs and submit the application to the Building Department.

Electrical, Plumbing & Mechanical Permits - Applications can be submitted in person or by mail.  Applications for new heating systems require that a "heat loss calculation" sheet be submitted.  REMINDER:  Homeowner can only sign for a permit if the building is a single family, owner occupied residence.

After the application has been submitted, the Inspector will review the information.  If any questions arise, the office will contact you.  The turn around time from application submittal to issuance of a permit is one to two weeks.
